Not too long ago, co-founders Nick Huzar and Arean van Veelen sat down to talk about their new journey as fathers-to-be. They couldn't believe how something so small could already fill their homes with so much stuff. With the understanding that many items would come and go into their homes for just a short while, they wanted to know if there was a place to buy and sell gently used items. They looked at existing players in the market and decided it's really hard to sell things. Americans are sitting on thousands of dollars in unused or unsold items in their homes and businesses (over 10 billion items combined). That's a lot of value locked up! OfferUp was born with one mission in mind: to make buying and selling as easy as taking a photo.
When life gives you lemons, you build a lemonade empire. At least that's the adage according to Nick Huzar. As an internet executive with over 12 years of experience leading product teams, Nick is a driven leader fueled by big picture ideas and the creative minds that help build them. For three years, Nick led the development and integration of web applications at T-Mobile and spearheaded the growth and success of his start-up, Konnects, overseeing membership rates jump from 1,500 to over 1 million within 18 months.
Most recently, Nick was bit by the start-up bug again when he discovered he was going to be a father. Within days, his house began filling with valuable baby items that he knew his newborn daughter would outgrow within a few months. Armed with an idea and a smartphone, OfferUp was born. Now equipped with the titles CEO and dad, Nick's ready to revolutionize buying and selling with OfferUp.
With his Dutch heritage, Arean van Veelan is used to being called "frugal"; however, he prefers the phrase "efficient solutions seeker". This ideology has woven itself throughout Arean's life beginning when he wrote his first software program in elementary school to his 20 years of experience designing and building scalable software products.
When he's not creating and developing web and mobile based consumer products and features as OfferUp's CTO, Arean enjoys spending time outdoors with his son. He's not shy when it comes to telling fellow hikers about the great deal he got on the used baby carrier via OfferUp. Arean looks forward to the changes OfferUp will bring to the mobile marketplace and can't wait to make them as efficient as possible.
